When I was a sophmore, I went to my first bridal shower. I didn't know the bride personally, she had graduated two years previous. I was invited because I was part of the drill team that she had commanded during her senior year. I was a "friend by proxy". It was a fun shower, how could it not be so with so many teen girls? (And Wendy was the recipient of a lot of lingerie... which I'm sure her hubby appreciated!)
So today, Kim is attending her first shower.... a baby shower.... for a fellow classmate. The teacher has arranged for a surprise shower during the class time. I appreciate where the teacher's heart is in this....the girl is a single mom with limited resources. She's directed the boys to bring diapers and diaper wipes and she's allowed the girls to buy beyond the diaper.
I think what bothers me the most is the number of teen pregnancies we have in this area. I don't know if its lack of parental supervision, or a lack of fun teen things to do around here, or a combination of both. I just think it's so sad that these girls are missing out on so much by rushing motherhood.
